Peru: A world of many climates
Among the 104 climates all around the world, Peru has 87 of them. So, you will find a huge varietes of natural habitats with their particular asset of animals and plants as well as natural resources. PerĂş is second to Colombia in bird species with more than 1700 species all around and has more than 3000 species of orchids.
North
Mangrove
North of Peru, two mangrove regions are found, the first one on the ocean merge of the tumbes river and the second related to the Piura river, were oround 120 species of birds have been recorded.
Beach
Beach Punta Sal and Máncora are two of the most renowed beaches north of peru, at both locations you can find high quality lodging and services, including deep sea fishing excursions.
Desert
Most of the coast side of Peru are populted with deserts due to a particular condiction of lack of rains due to the Humboldt cold under sea current, a narrow coast and high mountains. The largest of them however are located in Piura where equatorial dry forest is the dominant habitat up there.
North East
Andean
The high mountains of the northern part of Peru include various inter andean valleys as well as the lowest altitude to cross the andes called “abra de porcuya” (Porcuya´s opening) at 2200 m above sea level. The route Olmos-Rio Marañon is part of the birdwatching route as well as the way to reach the Kuelap ruins
High Land Valleys
The valleys around 1200 to 1700 m above sea level are very rich in biodiversity, being the valeys of Huancabamba and various valleys in Cajamarca and Amazonas real orchid paradises. The same valleys also have a reach varieties of animal species , as an example, in Cajamarca you will find the rarest species of humminbirds sucha as the Gray-breasted Comet and the green tailed trainbearer.
Jungle
The Olmos-Rio Marañon road , is also the by land route to the Forest, reaching the lowlands of San Martin, from there on, to the east you will find a vast amazon forest, you can reach either by river or plane. The main visitor attraction will be Iquitos, an island between rivers.
Central Coast
On the central coast , we can find interesting habitats such as the foggy hills of machay, very close to the capital city with a different scape depending on the season. Nourished with the dense fog that condensates on the hills and feed the vegetable species that house a variety of animal species. Lima alone has many species of birds and in a single open park (El Olivar, in the residential city of San Isidro) you can find as many as 30 species of birds
Central West
Andean
Traveling from Lima towards the east you will very soon be climbing the andes , either if you go by bus or train you need to cross the andes at high altitude (around 4800 m above sea level), clear skies, beautifull lakes are on the way to the mining zones of Junin and Cerro de Pasco.
Middle High Jungle
From Junin, heading to the east are very rich nature holding habitat starting in San Ramon , la Merced and Satipo where a large variety of birds,butterflies and orchids are the main atractions.
South Coast
Paracas National Reserve
The reserve is located 260 Km south of lima, which is the home of a diverse fauna that includes 216 bird, 52 fish ,19 mammal and six reptile species. The more known place to visit is the ballestas islands which are a group of scattered rock islands were thousands of birds fly every day. Some of the species are considered endangered (The Humboldt penguin, American flamingo, Peruvian diving petrel, and many more).
South West
Manu National Reserve
The Manu Biosphere Reserve and the Manu National reserve share the Madre de Dios and Cusco regions close to the border with Brasil and houses the major bio.doversity in the world. With more than 1000 bird species and thousands of flora species, this place is a must for nature oriented visitors.
