Many people prefer Chachapoyas for its forest and archaeological sites as well as the weather which is neither too hot nor too cold. This place is a unique archaeological and ecological area of the Americas and is a showcase of a culture forgotten by the present civilization.

Day 01 : Chiclayo - Chachapoyas

Airport pick up in Chiclayo and private transportation to Chachapoyas. On the way to Chachapoyas city we will see panoramic views of the dry forest Marañon River and low land forest. Overnight in colonial house (3*) (BL).

 

Day 02 : Karajia - Choctamal

Visit the famous sarcophagi of Karajia embedded in a cliff. From there we will see more than thirty intact sarcophagi embedded in another mountain. Overnight at the Choctamal Marvellous Spatuletail Lodge where, with a little bit of patience, we can observe the most beautiful hummingbird in the world (Marvellous Spatuletail sp.), in danger of extinction. The hostel is located on the road to Kuelap just 35 minutes trip to the fortress with excellent panoramic views of Kuelap and the Yumal dale.

Day 03 : Choctamal - Kuelap - Chachapoyas

We will spend the day at the Kuelap fortress known as the Northern Machu Picchu of Peru. Kuelap has more than 400 structures inside platforms or terraces at different levels; it is the biggest limestone structure of the Americas. Kuelap is at an altitude of more than three thousand meters above sea level. Orchids and Bromelias cover the walls and trees within the fortress. On the way to Chachapoyas, we observe the “platforms of Macro” located on other hills on the shores of Utcubamba River. Overnight at Casona Colonial.

Day 04 : Chachapoyas - Chiclayo

Transfer to the airport in Chiclayo for connections to Lima.

Legend tells that the Chachapoyas people were extraordinary warriors and that they built large fortifications on the upper parts of the mountains of the mysterious Amazonas province. On this occasion, we will not only see Kuelap but also the second largest archaeological site after Kuelap. Finally we trek for 3 hours from Levanto to Chachapoyas.

Day 01 : Chiclayo - Chachapoyas

Airport pick up at Chiclayo and private transportation to the city of Chachapoyas. We will see panoramic views on the route to the city of Chachapoyas. Overnight at Casona Colonial.

Day 02 : Chachapoyas - Huancas - Levanto

Visit to the Sonche Cayon and Huancas, a “mitimae” Inca village (residents were brought from Huanuco to pacify the “people of the clouds”). The main activity of Huancas is ceramics handicrafts, they are now suppliers to the area. A five-minute walk will take us to the Sonche Cayon. After lunch we will go to Levanto (1 hour) the most important city in the area at the time of the Inca invasion and colonial epoch. You will see a church as old as colonial churches in Lima. We will take a 20-minute road trip to explore the ruins of Yalape, and also visit the “Colla Cruz” which was a very important Inca crossroad that linked the populations of the north, south, east and west. Overnight in Levanto.

 

Day 03 : Inka Trail Levanto - Choctamal

Visit to the Inca Trail downhill from Levanto to Chachapoyas (3 hours), lunch in Chachapoyas and overnight in Choctamal Marvellous Spatuletail Lodge where you can see hummingbirds and orchids. The hostel is located on the road to Kuelap just 35 minutes from the fortress and has an excellent panoramic view of Kuelap. (B,L,D)

Transfer to the airport in Chiclayo for connections to Lima.
Optional: Transfer to Tarapoto instead of Chiclayo (9 hours). In this tour you can appreciate the differences of the panoramic view of the high altitude jungle versus low altitude jungle. The flight to Lima leaves at night
